The top 12 destinations in England

England is quite amazing – it has thatched houses, cozy coastal cottages, an abundance of greenery, and a wealth of history! And these are some of the most gorgeous little villages, tiny communities, coastal resorts, and immaculately manicured gardens anywhere if you’re looking for the purest of authentically British experiences.

We’ll refer to it as the Quintessentially Great British Bucket List, which includes all of the top English tourist destinations.

Cambridge

Known primarily for its British intelligence and architecture, Cambridge is home to some of England’s oldest universities, such as the magnificent Tudor Trinity College and the huge 16th-century Gothic King’s College Chapel. Situated along The River Cam, which flows through the center of Cambridge, are the historic colleges. Punting is one of the city’s must-do, very British experiences. Viewing the city and enjoying a few of Pimms while rowing down the river is highly recommended. What about at night? Head to one of the many traditional bars strewn along the cobblestone streets after grabbing your bikes.

The Painswick Cotswolds

The Cotswolds, and especially Painswick, are the perfect destination if you’re looking for softly undulating hills and a ton of adorable, classic English towns. The picture-perfect town, known as “The Queen of the Cotswolds,” is among the best-preserved locations in the region and is a strong candidate for inclusion in the list of the top tourist destinations in England. This is the perfect place to unwind while taking in everything that England has to offer, with plenty of pubs, quaint winding lanes, and views across the Severn Valley to the Welsh mountains beyond. Don’t miss visiting Painswick aRococo Garden, a true masterpiece of 18th-century architecture.

The Stone Temple

It would be impossible to visit England and not go to Stonehenge. One of the earliest structures in Europe, the stone circle dates to the late Neolithic Period, or approximately 3000 BC. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, you may explore the world-class exhibits, the historic scenery, and follow in the footsteps of your Neolithic ancestors. You can try it out on our London Explorer trip, where we’ll take you to Stonehenge for a day to learn about its history and then to the stunning city of Bath, which is also on this list!

Cornwall and Polperro

Perfect example of a seaside hideaway, Cornwall is a rugged region on England’s southwest coast with some of the most stunning beaches. This is why it is consistently ranked among the top destinations in England, especially during the summer. Polperro is a picturesque, untouched fishing village in the area, including houses perched on cliffs and winding streets brimming with art, ceramics, floral arrangements, and bakeries. This hidden treasure on the Cornish coast offers galleries, exhibitions, stores, eateries, and even outdoor performances.

Bath, one of the most fashionable and stunning towns in England, is permeated with 18th-century Georgian architecture and is nestled on the Southwest hills. And the finest part? Its baths are its main claim to fame. This is the perfect weekend getaway because it is home to the 2,000-year-old Roman Baths and natural thermal springs. There are also plenty of boutique stores, pubs, and dining options to keep you occupied. While you’re at Royal Victoria Park, visit the lovely botanic garden for a peaceful respite.

Stratford-upon-Avon

William Shakespeare, the most famous writer in England, was born and raised in this historic medieval market town with a rich history dating back more than eight centuries. Shakespeare was born in Stratford in 1564, and if you visit the town, you may see the influences for “Romeo & Juliet” right away. Nothing says “traditional Britain” quite like Warwick Castle, the quaint Tudor village, and theatrical productions by The Royal Shakespeare Company.

Most renowned for being the oldest and most prestigious university in the English-speaking world, Oxford has educated 50 Nobel Prize winners in addition to 26 British prime ministers. This esteemed city, which was founded in the 13th century, is probably most known for being the location of several Harry Potter sequences. This alone makes it one of the greatest places to travel in England. Take a punt or a bike ride around the city, and make sure to stop at one of the many afternoon tea establishments, if you’re not lost in a world of literature or Harry Potter. There are plenty of enjoyable things to do.

The Lake Area

Look no farther if you’re looking for rough British countryside. The Lake District, the most visited national park in the UK, is one of the greatest destinations in England because of its shimmering lakes, endless verdant hills, and breathtaking natural beauty. The most elevated peaks in England promise to provide you with breathtaking vistas, peace, and outdoor experiences. A sample of this is available on our tour to England and Scotland.

Both the Lakes and the Peak are loved for the huge expanse of rugged wilderness they offer, whether it’s a day trip or week-long holiday you’ve got in mind – but each one is unique. The Lakes, as you’ve probably guessed, is more about the vast waters that surround those lush mountains, plus it’s roughly 1000 sq km bigger than the Peak, and contains more challenging walks. The Peak District is famed for its valley views, climbing crags and deep caves which you can explore. It’s also got some of Derbyshire’s best local pubs on its doorstep – you’ll need a hearty meal after stomping around the moors all day!

Visit Chatsworth House whilst you’re here too, a huge stately home in the Derbyshire Dales with beautiful gardens, a local farm shop and wild animals roaming the grounds.

Devon

Devon is a UK gem. This small area in the southwest of England really comes to life in the warm, sunny summer months. Its long stretch of white sand beaches, azure sea, and lush green surroundings could occasionally lead one to believe they are in the Mediterranean. Indulge in nature by hiking, surfing, swimming, paddle boarding, and becoming completely off the grid. On our Devon Detour trip, combine the rippling wave with meditative yoga; it’s nourishing for the mind, body, and spirit, and there’s tons of wonderful food involved too.

We suggest driving the over 100 miles between Dorset and Devon that make up the Jurassic Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Its astounding beauty site has been preserved by nature for over 185 million years, and it never ceases to amaze.

London

London as well. Without stopping at the Big Smoke, would the journey really be considered complete? There are several reasons why London, according to many Londoners, is the greatest city in the world (if not all of England). It’s nonstop, intense, chaotic, and that’s exactly why it works so well. Sure, you have the famous sites—Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, the London Eye, the Houses of Parliament, Tower London, Westminster Abbey, and so forth—but what you’re going to adore most is the VIBE. There is a diverse population, a wide range of food options available at all times of the day, and a wide range of music and nightlife options to cater to all tastes.

London is a hidden paradise, so don’t be fooled by the traffic and congested streets! With more than 3000 parks and numerous stunning waterways (Hampstead Heath Ponds, we’re looking at you), there are plenty of opportunities to retreat to more peaceful environments when the mood strikes.

East Sussex’s Rye

This town in England, which is close to the East Sussex coast, can transport you back to bygone eras. The ideal location to truly experience the charm and beauty of England is one with Tudor architecture, medieval homes, antique shops, quirky shops, cobblestone streets, and even a lovely harbor. On the outskirts lies the beach town of Brighton, where you can spend a day by the water, eat fish and chips on the pier, take in some amazing street art, and take in the vibrant creative environment.

Polperro, Cornwall

Perfect example of a seaside hideaway, Cornwall is a rugged region on England’s southwest coast with some of the most stunning beaches. This is why it is consistently ranked among the top destinations in England, especially during the summer. Polperro is a picturesque, untouched fishing village in the area, including houses perched on cliffs and winding streets brimming with art, ceramics, floral arrangements, and bakeries. This hidden treasure on the Cornish coast offers galleries, exhibitions, stores, eateries, and even outdoor performances.
